DEI Promotes Dan Caban to Director of Cybercrime Investigations
DEI is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Dan Caban, EnCE, CCE to the position of Director of Cybercrime Investigations.
This appointment represents the streamlining of both Mr. Caban's responsibilities at DEI and the company's efforts to tailor its services to the evolving nature of internet and computer-related crime.
Mr. Caban has been with DEI since 2005, and since then has conducted hundreds of internet investigations and has been instrumental in the development and advancement of the company's proprietary, web-accessible Integrated Case Management database (ICM). The ICM incorporates a wide range of functions necessary to manage a high volume of fast-paced investigations, including several open-source data mining utilities. The ICM allows DEI and its clients to conduct intelligence-led investigations by archiving and preserving large volumes of online content for use in convert investigations and litigation. The ICM database currently contains over 200 million records from forum posts, IRC chat, newsgroups and web sites.
Mr. Caban's skill set and his work with the ICM has allowed DEI to become a leader in cybercrime investigations in both Canada and the United States. DEI has contributed intelligence and expert testimony that has led to multi-million dollar judgments against individuals and companies accused of intellectual property theft and piracy on the internet.
DEI is an international leader in identifying the perpetrators of internet-related crimes and in preparing the evidence necessary to stop them. The creation of DEI's dedicated Cybercrime Investigations department under Mr. Caban's competent leadership will further advance DEI's standing as a leader in computer forensics, electronic discovery, document management and international cybercrime investigations.

DEI Plays Integral Role in $51 million Judgement Against Satellite TV Pirate
Earlier this month, Robert Ward of Florida was handed a $51 million summary court judgement for violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Federal Communications Act. The case arose out of a civil suit filed after Dish Network and DEI investigators found that Ward was stealing satellite signals, and helping others to do so by using online discussion forums.
The court found that Ward had violated the DMCA by distributing software designed to facilitate illegal access to Dish Network signals. In what will become legal precedent, damages were calculated according to the number of times files posted online by Ward were downloaded. Damages in the Ward case were awarded at a rate of $200 per download, but the DMCA allows for fines of up to $2500 per download.
DEI was instrumental in tracking the downloads of Ward's files, and in providing the expert witness reporting that proved Ward was behind the online aliases who posted the files. "This is a significant landmark in the fight against satellite piracy," DEI's manager of intellectual property protection services Dan Caban said. "The severity of the judgement will deter future pirates, and will assist in the prosecution of other targets whom we are currently investigating."

DEI's ICM Archives its 75 Millionth Post
On Thursday, December 3, DEI's Integrated Case Management (ICM) Database Forum Crawler utility archived its seventy five millionth online forum post.
The ICM has been crawling and archiving online discussion forums since 2005, and its archived post count grows exponentially each month. The ICM archives the complete contents of more than 600 forums, and this open source content has been used by DEI and other investigative agencies across the world in many legal proceedings.
The ICM is DEI's proprietary case management and open source data mining suite of tools. In an intelligence-led environment, the ability to archive, organize, and quickly retrieve all data relevant to a particular case is essential. Derek MacIsaac Completes CCE Certification
DEI is pleased to announce that Derek MacIsaac, one of DEI's Internet Investigations Specialists, is now a Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) as approved by the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners (ISFCE). Mr. MacIsaac joins Dan Caban, DEI's Manager of Intellectual Property Protection Services, as a Certified Computer Examiner who has been trained in the highest standards of forensic computer investigation. CCE training and testing emphasizes sound evidence handling and storage procedures, as well as adherence to a strict code of ethics. Both Mr. Caban and Mr. MacIsaac play active roles in DEI's computer forensics and electronic discovery operations, and this latest certification enhances DEI's standing as Canada's leading provider of these services.

Digital Evidence International Has Moved
DEI is pleased to announce the relocation of its operations to 400 Queens Avenue, London, Ontario. After a 5 year tenancy in Richmond Street's Royal Bank Tower, the move will keep DEI in London's downtown core, but offer greater accessibility to both clients and employees.
"This beautiful and prestigious fully secured turn-of-the-century building is a testament to quality of service DEI provides to its clients" says Steve Rogers, President of DEI. "Our new location will more than triple the working space available to DEI, providing us with the capacity for the growth and service expansion that we are experiencing."
Our new facility will host permanent dedicated computer forensics and document scanning laboratories, augmenting DEI's expanding electronic discovery and major case management database services.

Dan Caban completes CCE certification
Dan Caban, DEI's manager of Intellectual Property Protection Services, is now a Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) as approved by the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners (ISFCE). Mr. Caban joins almost six hundred Certified Computer Examiners worldwide who have been trained in the highest standards of forensic computer investigation. CCE training emphasizes sound evidence handing and storage procedures and adherence to a strict code of ethics. Mr. Caban's CCE accreditation further enhances the breadth of experience and reliability that DEI offers its clients.

DEI President attends launch of International Cybercrime Research Centre
Steve Rogers was one of several leaders of business, law, and government in attendance at the launch of the International Cybercrime Research Centre in Surrey, British Columbia on July 8, 2008. The Centre, which received a $350,000 startup grant from the government of British Columbia, is the result of a partnership between Simon Fraser University, the B.C. government, and the Society for the Policing of Cyberspace (POLCYB). The Centre will focus its initial efforts on combating online child pornography with scanner-like tools that seek early identification of child abuse images. The Centre will work to fight social networking abuses and economic cybercrime, and will conduct research in online identity management and critical infrastructure protection. It will also conduct research into online crime trends and develop innovative methods to report them. One of the most important contributions the Centre stands to make is in the realm of global cybercrime, where a lack of legislation makes combating international offenses particularly difficult. "International collaboration together with intelligence gathering and analysis are critical factors to the success of any online investigation," states Mr. Rogers, who heads up Canada's most effective online private investigations firm. The Centre's director hopes to develop cybercrime as a field of study at the graduate, undergraduate, and professional levels.
POLCYB is a non-profit society whose goal is to bring together experts to combat and prevent online crime. Mr. Rogers serves as an advisor to the POLCYB Board of Directors, and participated in a panel of experts discussing efforts to combat child pornography on corporate networks.

DEI Launches new website!
DEI has launched a new website to match the timing of its block advertisement on the Law Times home page and in the Law Times 2007 News Makers magazine. The new site offers enhanced navigability and information on the many services offered by DEI. The new site launch comes alongside the DEI web site's shift from digitalevidenceintl.com to dei.ca, a move made to streamline DEI's online presence.

Don Clark joins the DEI team
DEI is proud to announce the appointment of Don Clark as Manager of Computer Forensics Services for Western Canada. Don has an educational background in mathematics and computer science, and he brings to DEI experience from an RCMP career spanning more than two decades. During his time with the RCMP, he was the Acting Staff Sergeant in charge of the London Computer Forensic Lab before becoming the Sergeant in charge of the Vancouver Integrated Technological Crime Unit. In addition to these leadership roles, Don gained extensive experience working with and installing a variety of hardware and software applications in the London Computer Forensic Lab, where he was instrumental in the creation, installation, maintenance and training of Major Case Management software. Don has also provided training in computer search and seizure procedures to personnel at the Ontario Police College. He has assisted in numerous computer searches and seizures, and has experience extracting data from many different computer operating systems. He has lectured on internet crime, the proper handling of digital evidence, and using the internet to assist in investigations. Don's credentials include A+ Certified Professional, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Certified Novell Administrator (CAN), and he has received advanced training in the use of the world's leading forensic software, EnCase Forensic.
